Has working retail (or any other sales job) helped your confidence in approaching?

Infinitely times YES.

My first job ever was a commission based retail job and I was shy. After the 2nd day my manager told me to square up, approach people regardless of what sex they are, and treat them like potential sales... or don't bother coming in to work the day after lol. Now I can go up to anyone and initiate a conversation.

In my mind I'm not thinking 'She's hot what if she says no' etc etc but rather 'I want to get her phone number' (comes from the 'I want to get her credit card mentality from my job'). It also helped me with 'listening' to people. If I connected with customers they were more likely to buy something. I don't just wait for my turn to speak, I wait for them to finish and bring the conversation back to them, making it about them. People love to talk about themselves.

Man I hated that job at first but it made talking to everyone easier.

bartender here - any job that requires you to actually talk to people will inevitably make you better at talking to people. Once you realize that nobody is out to hurt you nor really cares what your doing or who you are it becomes progressively easier to talk to most people about pretty much anything. Jobs accelerate that lesson quite a bit.
