Sure you can try. She probably won't respond well and it might ruin your chances in the future. Generally guys who ask out girls through social media are regarded as desperate or thirsty.

The better approach is to have the mutual friend invite you both out to something.

I mean what's stopping you from getting her number, then asking her out a few hours later like the normal way. Or even better you can do it person; "Hey you seem fun, let's hang out some time."

I've asked a girl out through social media that I had known in person but never really talked to. She said yes and we had a great time. My recommendation is, if the date or hang out is going well, make sure to ask her out again in person and work from there.
