Yeah, I think it actually helps ground you and clears your head tremendously. Download an app called "headspace". It's a guided meditation and it's actually made it a little bit easier for me.

Yes. I've gone up to the sixth jhana (and I have suspicions that one day while at a monastery I actually entered the seventh, but am not sure).

Meditation serves two purposes.

One is pleasure. Non-sensory pleasure replaces sensory pleasure and allows you to negate pain without the need for drugs, sex, alcohol, or intellectual stimulation (e.g., philosophy, TV, etc).

The second is using it as a broom to achieve Liberation. You use the pleasure of non-sensory-based pleasure to keep yourself on the path to Liberation and have a more comfortable ride by sweeping away pain and lesser pleasures. It is the vehicle of serenity in Theravada Buddhism and clearly outlined in the Pali Canon.

Anything else is what Zen calls makyo. It's a distraction. I've seen the multi-verse collapsing onto itself and have directly tapped into what one might call God Consciousness, but it was not absolute. It was not Nirvana. And if it's not Nirvana, it's simply pleasure or pain. Not Truth.
