And this is why I succeeded in life (well except girls) even with a negative attitude and consequently low expectations. I work hard at my job and go out of my way to get along with everyone so I don't have to be the one laid off as a software engineer when the highly cyclical tech industry enters a recession. I also stay committed to working hard in the gym and eating a lot so I don't stay a skinny single man forever. There's all this talk about staying positive but it doesn't work for people like me who believe they've been dealt a bad hand in life. A more effective mindset for people like me is essentially, "The game is rigged, so you have to do more than all these luckier folks for you to escape depression and have even a fraction of what they have even when they did less. Have a chance at happiness or stay depressed eternally. What's it gonna be?"

A common saying I love in the realm of finance seems to apply in life as well: "Bull markets are born on pessimism, grown on skepticism, mature on optimism, and die on euphoria." Now replace "bull markets" with "upwards trajectories in life". The more dissatisfied you are, the more likely you're going to take steps to fix it.
