This wasn't even going to be a cold approach! She works at my local supermarket. I first spoke to her months ago saying she always looked so happy to be there (a dreamy smile on her face). She always smiles and waves to me since then, and sometimes when I've gone through the self serve area I've noticed her see me and sidle over to say hi.
So... tonight I went there partly or admittedly mainly to see if I could get her number.
After far too long of putting off checking out (I must have been in there for 20 minutes with about 3 items in my basket), and walking up and down each aisle trying to talk myself into it with my stomach so tight I felt like I was about to shit myself... I went through the self serve down the other end from where she was working because I just physically couldn't do it.
So without further ado, my excuses or thought patterns:
- I don't know what to say, do I just say 'by the way, what's your number' with a smile at the end of the transaction? Do I ask her to come along for food some day? Isn't that really weird?
- Similar to above, I don't have long enough for a proper conversation so it's weird to try to pick up in the time it takes to buy 3 items
- She's probably under 18
- She's probably just that friendly to everyone / because she has to be
- If there's another customer behind me I'll look like a creep
Technically I have another chance tomorrow if there's any point , she usually works most of the weekend. I'm starting to think therapy is a valid option here though.
