I feel you on that, I'm the same way. It's tough because if you're not looking for a serious relationship, you're pretty much only left with the option of going out to bars or clubs. It sucks. I guess patience is key. Just keep going at it, it'll come. I think maybe identifying what your weak points are (charm/conversation skills) and then working on them specifically through books or exercises might make the difference.

This is where your problem is. Stop worrying about playing game and just be natural. You want her to go back to your place, so go after it. Don't ask. If you're drinking at a bar, and she says she's bored or something, say "ya, me too. Let's get out of here." Take her hand and leave. Don't ask to go back to yours. Asking is a pussy move. You're a man, go after what you want. She's there just to have a good time, it's your job to lead her in that direction. Some of the funnest times of my life were things I didn't want to do at first, and someone forced me into the situation.
Then maybe you don't have the confidence when you approach. I wish I could find this video for you, but in the video the guy mentions a 60/40 rule. And when it comes to approaching, it's more like 80/20. This means that 60 percent of the time, the girls reaction has nothing to do with you. With approaching, it's more like 80 percent. Stop worrying about picking up girls numbers and shit for a while, and just go have conversations with everyone. Everyone likes talking about themselves, so just ask questions, listen, then respond based on those questions. If your problem is conversation, look up how to keep a conversation. And remember to smile. If you aren't smiling, you're automatically going to get shut down.
