When meeting a group of woman, how do you choose which one to hit on

Happens often to me. Sometimes I come to a conversation or meet a group of woman or a girl and her friend the first time and kind of like both of them or find both attractive but can't decide which one to hit on. Do you go by looks or what do you do because you can't fail with one and hit the friend right after it.
