Your problem was you didn't just ask her out earlier. Next time, be more obvious about you liking a girl. Just flirt and call her cute and stuff. Never be like "I really like you" because it causes some type of pressure to analyze their feelings toward you.

Yes, it is a huge mistake. Never tell a girl that you like her or love her. Just show her. Try to seduce her. This like/love thing should be told only after sex. It is better if your girl says it first.
