Yeah I know it isn't. Sometimes you shouldn't approach directly. For example if girl is taken you can't immediately ask her out, you need some more time to build up her trust and so on..

So would you rather build up that attraction and show her you are better than her partner? Or just ask her out and get refused in 90% of cases?
