Hi there,

As you can see above, I made a video about what humour is, why it is so important in our social life and how to be funny.

Research has shown that humour is very important when looking for potential mates, even more important than just having good looks. Men display a certain level of intelligence and social skills by using humour, which is attractive for women. The reasons why it's so attractive to women is that having intelligence and social skills indicated that you have good genes. Additionally, there is the concept of social proofing; when other people in your social group are laughing with your jokes, you display your status and acceptance in the group. From an evolutionary perspective this status is good as it means security for your potential partner and children. Women, on the other hand, don't have to make jokes. Men are especially looking for women that laugh at their jokes as this can be a sign of sexual interest.

There are many theories about why something is funny. A well-known theory is the benign-violation theory. Something appears to be funny because it's a violation and it's benign at the same time. A violation can be a physical threat, a threat to one's personal dignity, a threat to violate social norms or a threat to violate moral norms. Such a violation can be benign when it crosses one norm while being good according to other norms.

A violation can also be benign when you aren't strongly connected to this norm. For example, a racist might laugh with racist jokes because he doesn't care about people with another skin colour.

Violations can also be benign when there is a lot of distance (social, spatial, temporal, ...) between you and the violation.

One tip to be more entertaining is remembering funny stories that happened to you instead of jokes.

Jokes show that you can remember a few sentences, it doesn't show that you are a funny person.

The same goes for pick-up lines on Tinder; they show that you're interested in the girl and that you can remember one sentence. Funny stories show that you live an entertaining life.

Next is using the rule of 3. Comedians often repeat a certain pattern in a story. The same thing happens 3 times over again. The first two times, the pattern builds up some tension to the punchline. The third time, something weird/unexpected happens and this makes people laugh.

Act out the stories that you tell; imitating people and using their accents makes stories more lively and humourous. Don't forget to leave some silences in your story. People need time to process a punchline and laugh. If you watch comedy shows, you can see that comedians often use silence in their advantage instead of continuously talking to fill up silences.
