I would advise otherwise. Forget her for a while. Find other girls of interest and become more friendly with girls. Maybe you will find someone better. If not, you will have built enough confidence and non-neediness that asking for her number will be rather you giving her the opportunity to join you the cool guy in your adventure and not you being a second option or a possible doormat. It will also cure you of oneitis
The only problem is we only have like two more days of class and the semester is over... like you said though I am not trying to be a second option, so idk if I'll be wasting my time

If you are sure she will be able to free herself or you can handle rejection you can ask her number. If she gives you her number without being very receptive on going out you may get too attached and desperate as the summer goes by and you won't have as much physical interaction.
Or you can just forget her. Do what your gut tells you to. But never become emotionally dependent on her.

You ask her number and tell her you would like to keep in touch during summer and maybe hang out as you find her quite interesting.
If you she refuses then accept it. You have done your part in man to woman communication. None of that "class related assignment" bullshit as she knows very well you can get that number from people you are communicating more often than with her. Also that won't be your true intention and girls sense that shit. Even if she doesn't sense it you will most likely enter into friend zone this way.

There is probably thousands of girls on this college, don’t go for the one with a boyfriend. I wouldn’t ask her for her number or anything.

Don’t feel sad over this one girl. If you go bang any other girl, it will help you forget this smiley girl in your class. Also, it’s very weak to be desperate over one girl. This is a condition known as “oneitis”.
