It irks me so much when people who don't practice something give advice on that thing they don't practice.

But yes, I do something similar and I'll break it down for you, boys. Keep in mind I'm technically still a noob, I'm still learning, but I did do ~100 cold approaches this year alone, so at least nothing that I'm talking about is hypothetical.

My usual opener is "excuse me, I know this is <forward/unusual>, but I just saw you <walking across the street/striding towards me/whatever> and I thought you look cute, so I want to meet you" - after that I pause for a moment, give the girl an opportunity to react, and then extend my hand and introduce myself. Important note on handshake - I don't let go until I feel that she's starting to let go first. Sometimes the girl will not let go for a long time, so this kind of turns into us holding hands and is my first physical escalation move.

Once we exchanged names I just ask where she's going, or what she's up to. That might be a boring question I suppose, but 1) I already demonstrated high value just by approaching her sober in broad daylight, which not many men have the balls to do, 2) it gives me something to work with, as she'll say something like "oh, I'm going back home after a long day at uni", 3) it could be used as the beginning of the Apocalypse Opener, although I have not tried this particular possibility out yet.

Now I can stack, by commenting on her clothes and using what little information she gave me thus far, e.g. if she said she's coming back from uni I can say "you look <elegant/stylish/whatever she actually looks like>, I'd guess then you study <something>". Sometimes there isn't much to work with, but often times there's actually some meaning to what she's wearing - e.g. a girl smartly covering her neck with a scarf works with her voice and wants to become an opera singer. Go from there, ask questions, tell stories.

Also, I'm not particularily interested in her number - I'm not writing a phone book. I'm interested in her, and only take the number to confirm any plans we make. So I'll suggest, e.g., grabbing a drink together sometime, and if she's down I'll take my phone out to grab her number, so we can text and figure out a time that works for both of us.

Hahaha, you're asking for my "stats"? OK, I'll give you my stats. As I said, I did about 100 approaches this year - not sure exactly how many, stopped counting quickly. First wobbly approach was in February I think, then on the 25th of March I decided to start doing this consistently - and I did. Keep in mind that a lot of my early approaches were done with one intention only - to get me used to approaching women and talking to strangers, so I didn't even attempt to close most of the time. Instead, I was asking for compliments or asking questions, like "what first impression am I making" or "how would you rate my looks from 1 to 10" - so I wasn't trying to pick them up, but I was still putting myself out there and making myself vulnerable. Once I got over the "fear" of approaching, and I figured out an opener that worked better for me, I started pushing myself harder. My "results" at the moment are: something like 15 numbers, one private instagram, and three facebook closes (although one of those three girls ended up not accepting my friend request), and an instant date that also ended with us exchanging numbers. I also gave my number to one girl when my phone died, and wrote my number down when a girl working the cash register at a shop gave me a pen and piece of paper after we chatted briefly about tattoos (neither of those two actually wrote to me). Apart from the instant date I had two other dates, one of which didn't amount to anything, the other ended with some making out. So... Progress is going slowly, but I'm taking the little wins, and I think just the fact that I'm actually going out and doing this is a win in itself.
