The first (and highest rated) comment was spot on: the guy was obviously socially inept in that his pickup line was "do you play video games?" 😳. At no point in pickup history will that EVER turn a girl on. Lol. He was ultra creepy and that is automatically a NO.
Secondly, he also had NO self awareness. He awkwardly approached a GROUP of girls...so right there he was doomed. And when they rejected him, instead of walking away...he kept spitting compliments?! Smh. Were they wrong for laughing in his face - yes. But HE really had no common sense...so he basically walked into the fire and got what he deserved.

His nonverbal was off, and his verbal was not calibrated to the girls or the social setting. He would have been better going in direct.
Trying to go from true neutral and into seduction mode doesn't make sense for a newb.
And it really sounds like he was trying to build comfort/rapport/commonality before attraction. Always possible, usually difficult.
Had this been some anime convention AND the girls were civilians not strippers doing cosplay - maybe asking about Cobra Triangle, would be the move.
If I was gonna go the video game route,
Do you think it's weird if a guy picks Chun Li?
Or.
You ever play Mario Kart? What happens if your boyfriend picks Princess Peach?
Or
My girlfriend plays (some phone game) but she flips out if I play (some console game)
That's just off the top of my head, but I would make the game topic relatable to the generic girls.
And the more personally interested in the thing, the more authentic your body language will be.
A video game opener would be fun to warm up with, but unless weed was involved, it would be tough to overwatch a chick into bed.
