Getting back into the game is smart, Rejection or not experience is priceless.
And generally moving faster is much better than moving slow, how long have you been talking to her?

True going the direct approach is risky as high school is pretty much one big giant social circle on the other hand has she shown her interest / IOI's?

Initiating small talk is one but small things like breaking eye contact looking down while talking to you, breaking eye contact first when conversing, looking towards you when she laughs...
Or things like investment (Think of when you invest in a house now replace the house with a girl and money with things like time or doing favours like giving class notes)
Btw initiating small talk comes under investment.

Like buddy said, highschool is all about social game. Don't do anything stupid like randomly asking her out all of a sudden. This isn't a fucking movie, or cold approach. You just need to ask her opinion on something and then use playful banter and push pull to build attraction. Once you are on speaking terms make it a point to talk to her every day. Always be a Little flirty and after a week or two invite her to do something with some friends. No date bullshit!! Bowling with friends or a party or something.
