Best way to break the ice is going into class, doesn’t make you seem like you are intentionally following her. Ask about an assignment or something going into class and introduce yourself. Get her name and say hi to her, using her name a few times, before a conversation after class. This way you can judge her responsiveness and not make it awkward for the rest of the semester if things don’t go well or if she is involved.

This is trail and error my friend, If you find her attractive and wanna ask her out, you have to be clear in your intentions. Don't ask about "class or assignments or yada yada" When class ends or starts approach her, say "Hi, Hey, I love you" whatever Honestly the stupider or funnier ones are your best bet.

I WOULD NOT ask for her number in your first interaction, if your a little uneasy because your nervous you have to build rapport with this girl. Otherwise she'll blow you off. You have class together so take some time. Talk to her every day. Give her a high five at the beginning of class when you approach her to say "morning/whatever". Then launch into a cool story about your day, something that happened recently, a show you watched whatever. If she responds back and asks your questions about yourself/life then she's interested. She needs to get to know you that your "cool".

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: MAINTAIN GOOD EYE CONTACT WITH HER

Whenever you talk to her you must maintain good eye contact. Looking at the ground the entire time or shifting eyes around looking at anything else says a lot about you to her.
