I learned this too. Even if I'm really bad at keeping a conversation going, I manage to collect numbers after a few drinks. Problem was, if I went for the number too early and got it, it left a space which would've been awkward to fill with "ok, see you, text you etc" it needed more conversation which I wouldn't produce and most of the time they were already bored and not even texting back.

After some trial and error, I did exactly what you explained, but it still leaves my problem with keeping a conversation going trough text, so..

What you should do is take the number/Instagram/Facebook/whatever at any point, and finish the conversation when you want, but not immediately. Then it isn't like you're just going up to girls, having a 5 minutes conversation, getting the number and then running away (Awkwardly).

Make a few small changes and it will make a big difference.

What about when it comes to messaging?

You don't wait until the convo is over to go for the number. It's bad and shows your agenda to the girl, as well as showing you can't handle a normal conversation.

You should only take the number when either one of you has to leave BTW. If you can stay around the girl now, why do you want to get her number to set up another day date while she's here right now? Lol.

If the conversation dies you have a few things to do : engage her, tease her or lead her somewhere else.
