So a friend of my girlfriend is considering breaking up with her boyfriend. She's mid-20s, been with the guy for a few years, but lately she's been questioning the relationship because he has "communication issues", and doesn't follow through on things he said he'll do around the house. The ambiguous nature of these complaints coupled with the fact that she's better looking and makes more money than him lead me to believe that this is a hypergamy driven concern. Makes sense to me (been taking the pill for a few years now).
Last night she called a hearing among her girlfriends (including my gf) to collectively construct a socially acceptable rationalization for breaking it off. In the end they all decided that he didn't meet her "key" points for a partner or some bullshit.
Anyway, my question... I'm aware that this kind of thing can be very contagious among close girlfriends and I obviously don't want the hive digging into my relationship. Are there any behaviors or actions I can take to minimize the problems that could result in my relationship due to the proximity of her best friend's breakup?
So far I'm using a sort of amused mastery, responding in brush off fashion with comments like "People like her don't know what they want and will always struggle in relationships because of it", or "She'll never be satisfied", etc.. Does TRP have a protocol for these types of situations?
