There's so many people who say 'small talk is so stupid, I want to move on to something more meaningful'.

The thing is, 'small talk' is kind of a misnomer. The whole point of small talk is to connect two people with something that they have common knowledge or interest in.

Sure, that can be the weather. Stereotypical small talk.

But it could also be something that everybody knows and isn't divisive. What do you think of the match last night? How did your exams go?

These are examples of things that two people who don't know each other can connect on, and it also gives the opportunity to expand the conversation further.

Compared to 'how are you', 'oh well it's raining again' (which are the stereotypical things that get small talk its bad name).
