I (M 33) work in a large company on a big corporate campus. My female friend that works in a totally different department and building, and knows that I am single, referred one of her colleagues (F 29), let’s call her Jess, to me for work advice. Jess wants to someday do a training program I recently completed. I have never met Jess before but I have seen her just once before and she is very beautiful. My female friend specifically told me she is referring Jess to me because Jess is ‘single’ and has ‘similar interests and values’ as me. My friend hopes we hit it off… yet the whole setup she is doing is based on purely business. Thus I’m meeting Jess for coffee on Friday at our work campus cafe to field her questions about the program I did. I’m wondering how to walk the line between giving work advice, which is what the meeting is set up to be, and then also do the obvious and try to make something more out of it/get to the non-work topics where we might hit it off. Do you all recommend I keep it just business and not try to move the conversation to non-work topics? How would I cross the line to let this person know I’d like to meet them outside of work or get their number if there is some good chemistry? Again, my place of work is huge so if things don’t go well, I can probably go months without ever seeing Jess at work. Anyway what do you all think?
