Yes, basically, it's when people try to rationalize something irrational or emotional by making fallacious arguments and citing random or irrelevant reasons to draw the wrong conclusion.

Mental gymnastics definition would be above.

Hamstering however, can also include defense mechanisms and the irrational mind of a girl in speculation-mode that jumps to wild conclusions that aren't supported by the evidence.

"I'm busy right now, I can't go out with you this week." -- hamster: "Is he having sex with others? Is he lying about being busy? Is he trying to play hard to get? He must be cheating on me."

Mental gymnastics would be mentally finding a way to accept or deny information presented to you, without necessarily basing anything on fact. You're twisting and turning about in order to come to a conclusion, typically one you want to draw despite the information pointing at something different.

In women, this is hamstering. In men, this is what makes betas accept all kinds of horrible dead bedrooms, female bullshit, and workplace degradation.
