Why would you say "are they pink, right"?

That's just a pointless and weird comment. It's now fully obvious to her you're just trying to hit on her, and it's worse because you made it weird by saying a pointless statement that broke the illusion that you're actually having a genuine conversation.

The whole point of the indirect approach is for her to think (or wonder) that you're not hitting on her. Did you actually care about the color of her shoes? No. She knew that too.

You need to say something that starts a conversation. She didn't engage with the shoe compliment so it would make sense to switch the topic. You could've asked her where she's from - but you need to deliver it right. Something like start turning away then look back and say "real quick, you look like you're not from here." Or "are you from [say a random state]"

Also stories are another good option. Just have a few stories prepared about the venue you're in. Yes you can make them up. For example, you could've said "I've got to get back to my workout in 10 second, but those shoes reminds me of the kitten that went missing in this gym"

This is why you always throw open-ended questions. Now you’re confused when she could just nod or shake her head to reply to your questions. Ask something like “what do you think of ….?” That would put her into the position that she can’t just answer yes or no. She needs to give you a complete sentence.

Also that habit of yours to close your questions with “…., right?” or “…, no?” needs to be thrown to the garbage. That kinda question implies that you need the person to agree with you aka validation seeking.

You are making a noob mistake. Starting the conversation by asking her questions, without revealing what you want, and without seeming her permission. Notice how you ask her about her shoes and yet she doesn’t know why you care about her shoes? She is wondering what does this guy want? Is he gonna leave me alone soon? Does he realize i don’t want to engage?

A better approach would have been to say:

“Hey listen, you got a brief minute?” (ask for consent)

Her: “Yeah sure?”

You: “Cool, listen I don’t usually approach women in the gym, as people like myself usually come here to focus, but I wanted to make an exception real quick, because i loved your shoes and I thought man, I’m so weak when I see someone with such great fashion sense that i thought I might regret it if i didn’t try to get to know you real quick, if that’s cool with you.”

With this type of intro, you solve her confusion about your intentions, and you give her the control to say sure i want to engage in meeting him, or not right now.

But your approach is just like:

“I don’t care if that’s cool with you or not, and i don’t care if you don’t get why I am talking to you because… i’m gonna force you into talking about your shoes, and if you don’t give me better responses i will keep pressuring you to give me more by asking more and more about it until you give me more than a simple nod.”

If you want to talk to people, always let them know why you want to talk to them, always make clear the reason and your intentions. Don’t assume they should know. And don’t ask questions to her until she has said sure let’s get to know each other. Ask for consent.
