A reminder that sexual assault of men in the general population is highly prevalent in US

Lifetime prevalence rates for sexual assault in the general population of women living in the United States range from 5% to 25%.

The prevalence of ASA(adult sexual assault) among community samples ranged from 0.2% of men to 30%.

CDC's data shows over half of women and almost one in three men have experienced sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetimes.

And again these are likely underestimates because men have more difficulty acknowledging their experiences.

The issue has been systematically under researched, under reported, neglected. And to boot statistics on male victims have actually been used to inflate numbers of violence against women and girls in official statistics, while suppressing info on men

There is orchestrated effort to drive certain narrative, and it is not the one where male victims are acknowledged and helped.

Even when a study applies a gender neutral measure of victimization and study both women and men parallelly with consistent questions, they still find less victimization among men.

https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00288985

Compare two studies like these:

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0886260513520230?journalCode=jiva

https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2011-21461-001

Both of these studies were conducted by the same researcher, on maybe a same/similar midwestern university and possibly used the same measures.

Results: 72% of women reported SV compared to 51% of men.

Their definitions were consistent for both men and women.

One study found 77.6% of women and 65.5% of men reported at least one instance of sexual aggression victimization.

https://www.uni-potsdam.de/fileadmin/projects/krahe-sozialpsychologie/images/pdf/Schuster_et_al_JSR_2016.pdf

One study found that in total, 83.9% of the participating women and 66.3% of the men reported having experienced something sexual since their fourteenth birthday that crossed a boundary for them.

https://www.tijdschriftvoorseksuologie.nl/images/content/pdfs/2010-34-2%20Grensoverschrijdende%20seksuele%20ervaringen.pdf

These studies clearly show that women clearly report more victimisation than men and there is almost a 5-40% gap between the victimization despite gender neutral measures.

So, I think men are underreporting here, but still there hasn't been an effective strategy to study that because even in studies studying underreporting among men, there still can be more underreporting.

Men certainly undereport and underaknowledge. Question should be phrased to counter this.  It is also possible women are more likely to be sexually assaulted. The issue is that all points to high rate of sexual predator on boys and men by women. Even if rates are a bit lower, they completely negative current official narrative that only men are predators and almost all victims are women and girls.

I couldn't agree more. We certainly need more advocacy for male victims.

So, I think men are underreporting here

Which is a systemic issue driven by society's inherent bias that women are the victims and men are the aggressors.

Not only is it prevalent, prison rape in the US seems like a cultural joke rather than a horrifying thing. Funny how no one jokes about female inmates getting raped though. Wonder why...

I don't know why you avoid meta-studies. Puts so much info in one place.

I don't avoid anything. If you have a good meta-study, please share.

[–]Vegetable_Ad1732 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sorry, did not mean to offend. I said that because I've referred a few metas to you already, and you never cite them. Like this

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/374715014_Rates_of_Male_Sexual_Coercion_Comparison_with_Female_Rates_and_Comparison_Between_Sexual_Orientations

Think I sent you this one too

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/371250869_An_Examination_of_Sexual_Coercion_Perpetrated_by_Women

And that second one cites the ultimate meta - Spitzberg, which includes a whopping 120 studies. Back then, Sptizberg was 1999, I think, there were few studies on female aggression though.

And the first link cites Anderson, which looked at 78 studies, only male studies though.

Oh, ok. I try to cite them whenever necessary.
