Ayn Rand is a philosophical hack.

She made up a complete strawman of altruism (complete rejection of the self) and kept smacking it over and over again

Her ideal minarchist utopia would completely ignore negative externalities like pollution. Dumping toxic byproducts into American rivers? That’s OK even if it kills wildlife, livestock and humans; as long as I’m not encroaching on people’s property rights! Then we can pretend that the neighbors’ cows dying is an act of God.

It’s complete BS. Just because state does bad things sometimes doesn’t mean that “big government” is evil. “Big government” funded basic research (like the research which led to the iPhone) that industry isn’t willing to fund, fed low-income workers with food stamps because corporations don’t pay them a living wage, ensured that corporations are held accountable for damage done to “the commons,” inspected the production behind the food on your table so you didn’t have to take the seller’s word, sent firefighters to prevent housefires from turning into municipal disasters, etc.

Any time that a public benefit isn’t profitable enough for big biz, the government stepped in and actually helped. Do you think Apple, Blueberry, Google, etc. would have actually sent satellites into space for GPS if it weren’t for the government’s pesky meddling?
