It’s positively wild how Brownmiller’s 1975 book Against Our Will is still treated like sacred feminist literature - even though it reflects a worldview shaped more by internalized trauma than reason.

She grew up as the only child of Jewish immigrants, raised on stories of pogroms & genocide. Hearing, and perhaps over - identifying with that kind of violence embedded itself deeply. Later, radical feminism gave her a new lens: one where men were the ever present threat & rape became a tool of systemic male control.

Her infamous quote - “rape is nothing more or less than a conscious process by which all men keep all women in a state of fear” isn’t just ideology but universalization of her own trauma.

She never married. Longed for companionship. Refused to “compromise.” Died alone at 90.

Even feminists like Bell Hooks & Angela Davis criticized her for racial insensitivity but that never stopped her book from becoming canon.

OP, you’re absolutely right - her ideas helped normalize a world where male victims of rape are mocked or erased, because her framework left no space for them. Ironically, she grew up fearing systems that dehumanized her ethnic group and ended up promoting a worldview that, in practice:

Dehumanized all men as rapists in waiting
Left little room for nuance, redemption or compassion

So, Let her rest in peace for a while and be reborn as a man living in the world she helped shape.
