I’m curious about norms around disclosure when it comes to high-value items received from past relationships.
I own a small number of valuable items—well beyond what I would typically purchase for myself—that were gifts from former partners. These are legitimate, high-quality assets (not sentimental keepsakes), and they’re still in use.
If this came up naturally with a current partner, what is generally considered appropriate or expected?
• Is straightforward disclosure (“it was a gift from a former partner”) the norm?
• Is a neutral explanation (“a gift” / “something I already had”) more typical?
• Or is the origin usually considered irrelevant unless directly asked?
Does this change depending on:
• The seriousness or longevity of the relationship?
• Whether the item is regularly used or simply owned?
• Whether the former partner is completely out of the picture?
Edit:
Would your answer change if the items were significant valuables, with price tags well into the six figures?
I’m less interested in moral arguments and more interested in how people in high-net-worth circles tend to handle this in practice—what’s considered discreet, tasteful, and appropriate.
