This is actually the situation many men are in. They'd rather be with women who are always trying to extract some sort of value from them (mostly material like money/ resources) than be single. And of course, as a man, it's very hard to find a woman who doesn't have this mentality, so if a man is going to have higher standards than this, he'll be single a lot of the time. So many men have actually just accepted that not being liked for who you are is a part of the deal when dating women.
Obviously, for men with self respect its much better to be single than to be with the kind of women who require some form of payment or material benefit from being with them. But considering what many men put up with in relation to how women treat them and what they expect them to do for them (pay for dates, etc.), it seems self respect isnt very common among alot of men.
