If you are quick on your toes then you can spin it around with a snarky retort but either way do not lose frame. They shouldn't have much to call you out on in the first place if you have your shit together. Generally I advise not doing anything that would let the other person be seen as a victim of your actions. Usually people who hurl insults are very easy to manipulate. Remember it's all about what's best for you and creating enemy's isn't a solid strategy. Challenge yourself to turn this person into a resource if possible. If it is just a random thing and vicious and you are not likely to see this person again. Get your revenge when no one is looking.

I picked this up from someone on here and it does work well:

Just say "Oh yeah?" and then look at them to keep saying something. Generally they have nothing else to say or they start backtracking.

Laugh and act uninterested, look away, change subject, involve yourself in another activity whilst they're continuously fishing for the rise they want to get out of you. Just do this all whilst you act 100% not butt hurt. You can't give even a little bit of a fuck. When all else fails, grin and stare at them until it gets awkward for them.
