CS/Programming as a major? How do you like your career? Alternative advice.

I like it. Good money and all, not difficult work most of the time. Hours can be bad when you're new/inexperienced/not willing to push back.

Jobs are always out there, especially for contract work. I get a few emails per day from recruiters. It's good for abundance mentality and negotiation.

Do it. I have a way higher paying job than all my friends from college. I can work when I want (chilling at home in bed today and no one cares), and the work is satisfying in a creative challenging sense. Plenty of job prospects if I wanna change gears. So happy with my decision.

I have a master's in software engineering. I've done various kinds of programming, design work, and project management. I like it. Lots of cool people.

Since you mentioned working in the oil industry, at the school where I did my undergrad (in computer science), Shell was a big recruiter. A lot of people I knew went to work for them. They liked strong database and business-oriented people. If that sounds interesting to you, with your field experience, you'll have no trouble getting in the door.

You're going to be working with a bunch of uber omega man-child nerds just FYI. Bone up on your star wars trivia. That said lots of nerds are secretly RP because they're smart enough to see the truth and nerdy enough to have been treated like shit by women and if you're alpha they might follow you like the messiah. But you'll have to treat them like women because they're thin-skinned, and they won't take kindly to being AMOGed.

My current work is in this field and I'm finishing up a quick BS in CS. My original education was in Bus. Fin. If you are into sales/marketing, it's a great field. Finding someone to make a product is easy, finding someone who can understand and sell that product is difficult.

There are a lot of great programmers and developers out there, there are not many that can bridge the divide between "geek speak" and "customer speak" or "executive speak". Sales of software and systems is different and more difficult than sales in general for a lot of people because they don't possess the tech background.

If you have a bunch of credit already, you are at a top 10 school, and you have free tuition, it makes a lot of sense to get the degree. You should have a good sense already of the difficulty of the courses and the effort required to finish the degree. Even if you don't ultimately do programming, an engineering type background translates into virtually every other field.

Pretty much same boat man. I work in the oil field as well and since everything went tits up I'm thinking I'll either go back and take computer science or a different type of engineering, maybe electrical engineering. I'm leaning more towards CS because I've always worked with computers and have a pretty good understanding of it already.
