There is some interesting information on government-paid retirement disability benefits (SSA/SSI.)

For purposes of reading this comment, it is important to understand the difference between SSA and SSI.

To qualify for SSA, A disabled or blind individual must have paid Social Security taxes to become insured for benefits. SSI qualifications require that A disabled or blind adult or child must meet all of the following categories:

Have limited income;
Have limited resources;
Be a U.S. citizen or national, or in one of certain categories of aliens; and
Live in the United States or Northern Mariana Islands.

but not that the individual must have ever paid into the social security system.

Also from the same page, "Eighty-five percent of SSI recipients received payments because of disability or blindness in 2011," meaning that only 15% of Supplemental recipients are receiving payment because of their age.

Between 2000 and 2010, Mental disorders more than tripled from 10 percent of cases 30 years ago to become the second largest diagnostic category with 32.8 percent. Half of these were considered “mood disorders,” such as depression and anxiety. Depression, anxiety and emotional problems increased 20 percent and, taken together, constituted the third leading cause of disability.

In other words, most men collecting federal social security benefits have paid into the system, and are collecting retirement benefits. A smaller majority of women collecting federal social security benefits have paid into the system and are collecting retirement benefits, and a significant number of women collecting federal disability benefits have not paid in enough to be eligible on their own, and are collecting dependent or caregiver benefits. Among adults who have not paid enough into the system to be eligible for Social Security payments, but are receiving income due to their own disability or age, women outnumber men. In short, the social security/SSI system is an area where a percentage of payout represents women collecting benefits paid for by working men. Also, the nature of disability funding itself is changing, with an astounding increase in mental health related disability in the U.S.

I've wondered this too. once you factor in welfare and child support received (as well as deducting taxes and child support from the calculation of male earnings) what does it look like?
