Averages don't mean shit.

You need an actual graph of numbers and percentages to understand data.

As a statistical measure, the "average", more appropriately the mean (and I'm aware there are different sorts of means and I'll focus on the arithmetic mean only here, but other means are similar), is a simple formula, the sum of numbers in your set over the number of numbers in your set.

The mean tells you sod all about the distribution of the data. To wit, the average of 19, 20, and 21 is 20, as is the average of 0, 20, and 40.

When reported, the mean should also include the standard deviation, which tells you how spaced out the distribution is. However, I rarely see the awareness of this mentioned in mass society, much less an objection to its omission.
