I have difficulties with power talk and (office) power dynamics in general. VERY OFTEN I pick up on stuff that seems like power talk/power plays, but at the same time doubt my read on the situation. Among other things, I worry that I read way too much into basic interactions because I'm socially stunted. Indeed, if I were to discreetly ask most of my friends or coworkers, especially women, about these moments (via straight talk), I'd get wishy-washy non answers; "could be," or, "you're thinking too much, man." So, I'm at a crossroads where I think I'm beginning to see implicit power dynamics at work, but it could all be my imagination/bullshit; an infuriating position to be in.
My questions: how do I go about 'confirming' and honing my understanding of powertalk? It seems like you have to just "get it," but I clearly don't. How do you practice speaking in power talk? And further, how do you figure out if you're reading things right or just being a over-imaginative sperg?
I understand that I have to do my own work, but don't know where to start because I have only ever (consciously) practiced straight talk. Any guidance, reading recommendations beyond the Gervais Principle, etc. greatly appreciated.
