Actually, Voltaire never said this, but the point is still valid.

Kevin storm is a neo-nazi white supremacist kiddy-porn-watcher. Is he the best person for us to quote? The nature of that person undermines any usefulness of the quote, imo.
Opposing feminism already attracts enough false claims of white-supremacy, we shouldn't give anyone any evidence for it. We are mostly egalitarians, right?

I know what you mean, but we all know here that the truth of a quote has no relation to who said it. We could do without that man's reputation, but the quote is bloody brilliant.

A good quote is a good quote.

neo-nazi white supremacist kiddy-porn-watcher
at least that's what they'll call you if you question those in power
[–]elwahrio5 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Well, I don't know him personally, so I can't know for sure. Regardless of whether or not he was framed, association with his reputation alone is damaging for us.

We're allowed to criticize feminists and SJWs, they just don't like it.
[–]aesopstortoise13 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
We are allowed to at the moment. Wait until they try passing laws to classify criticism as hate speech.

Deepends on the platform. There are many places when we arent.

I can see that expressing dissent is becoming more frowned upon even as some of us are getting more vocal, but other than higher education institutions, where it really does set the cat amongst the pigeons, what places were you thinking of?

They are in Sweden.

Sweden is fucking insane. It would be a no problem paradise if they could control the social aspect of their politics.
I think you mean the proposals in 'The European framework national statute for the promotion of tolerance' as quoted at AVFM -
http://www.avoiceformen.com/suggested-reading/eu-to-ban-anti-feminist-speech/
Utter madness, but I doubt it will get anywhere, yet ......
I've done some fact checking on that story in the past. That document is not an EU level policy, but a suggestion from some NPO or something. Do you have a source other than avfm that this was ever seriously considered by the eu parliament? Sometimes avfm isn't much better than jezebel or the guardian when it comes to accuracy and journalistic ethics.
[–]aesopstortoise1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
So far as I can tell you are right that the document is not official EU policy. I found a couple of documents online (can't remember where, just googled stuff), quotations below.
"European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation is an international NGO, established in October 2008 by Aleksander Kwasniewski, former President of Poland and Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress. The idea of the Council dates back to the International Stockholm Forum on the Holocaust organized by the Swedish Government on the 26-28 January 2000, which emphasized that the whole international community shares a solemn responsibility to fight such evils as racism, anti-Semitism, and xenophobia."
That is from a single page doc introducing them, which says they are based in Brussels. It does not say where their funding comes from. The document they produced, a draft statute which I assume they are hoping will be eventually passed into law, contains the part about 'eliminating' anti-feminism, among other things, and is titled,
"A EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK NATIONAL STATUTE FOR THE PROMOTION OF TOLERANCE SUBMITTED WITH A VIEW TO BEING ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURES OF EUROPEAN STATES "
I guess that there are many lobbying groups submitting draft legislation and proposals to the EU, but I still find this one concerning because it expresses the belief that many seem to have these days, that laws, ie the threat of the use of force, can solve every problem. I also find the language Orwellian, laden with the possibility of creating new thought crimes simply for expressing dissent, and of course, entirely contrary to any true spirit of freedom or tolerance.

This image has been circulating the web for years, I'm pretty sure it wasn't Voltaire who said that.
[–]ckulp993 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Sorry I forgot to confirm he said it guys my bad, but thanks for letting me know :)
[–]deadalnix2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It is amazing how many quote of Voltaire Voltaire never said.

"I never said that" -Voltaire
[–]ThePigmanAgain2 points 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Meh, too simplistic. More like "to learn who works for the plutocracy, simply find out who, other than the plutocrats themselves, you are not allowed to criticize."
[–]Gawrsh1 point 11 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
It's probably not from Voltaire, but from a guy named Kevin Alfred Strom, who is a neo-nazi.
"It's a surprisingly common mistake: attributing quotes to philosophers who never made them; but nevertheless can happen to the best of us."
-John Stuart Mill
