I have a young son who I want to raise to be a great man. Certainly the best way to teach him is by example --- involving him in sports and taking him to lift when he's old enough, showing him how to talk to people, etc, but I'm looking for a fairly structured curriculum --- books, movies, activities, etc. --- that can help him to absorb TRP --- without, initially, the self-consciousness that we usually see here.
Some I've come up with:
sports (anything competitive, really, include lifting by the time he hits puberty)
books: Aesop's Fables, Iliad, Odyssey, Byron's Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Moby Dick, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Crime and Punishment, Robinson Crusoe, The Canterbury Tales, Boccaccio's Decameron, The Prince (perhaps self-conscious), Shakespeare, Don Quixote, Gulliver's Travels, The Origin of Species, Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, Beowulf ...
film: Lawrence of Arabia, The Godfather, Star Wars (with caveats), Ben-Hur, Apocalypse Now, Raise the Red Lantern, Requiem for a Dream, Fight Club,
music: besides learning to play an instrument (preferably guitar, piano or drums), sing and dance to some degree, exposure to Western concert music --- and the technical skill required for it.
art: basic drawing skills (see Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain ... basically learning how to see and draw what is, not "symbols"), and exposure to great works of art: Michelangelo’s David, The Dying Gaul, Boxer at Rest, Ludovisi Gaul, Laocoön and His Sons, Doryphoros, Discobolus (I'm a fan of sculpture).
Any additions? Orderings? Categorizations by theme? I'd like to develop a "subconscious" curriculum both for my son and as an introduction for others.
