There are three times when a man is permitted to cry:

Death of a close relative.

Death of an old and faithful pet.

At the end of "Old Yeller", and/or the Jim Brown death scene in "The Dirty Dozen".

That's it. Otherwise, crying in front of women makes you a massive pussy who can't be counted on to save them from Sabertooth Tigers. If a girl sees you cry in "unapproved" situations, within about ten minutes of the "there, there's", she will have to excuse herself to go to the Ladies' to drop a tumbleweed out of her vag, which will be drier than the Gobi desert. Or the Sahara. Whichever one is drier.

Crying is for women, children and gay guys watching "Gone With The Wind". But not for men. Why? Because the Skipper always knows, and he doesn't act like a pussy in front of God and Everyone.

Broadly speaking I believe it possible to hold frame whilst crying, obviously depends on a set of very specific circumstances.

In this case his boss shattered whatever frame this guy had, and obviously the women reacted as they would if it was a female co-worker, which tells you how they percieve him.

Had your male colleague calmy suggested to his boss that this conversation be had in private, I doubt any women would have felt the need to intervene.

In summary, he lost frame, which ultimately manifested as tears.

Tears per se are not the issue, it's the frame loss.

I would have to be there to be sure. From the way you described it "they felt sad for him", I'd say he lost pretty much all the respect he ever had. IT IS NEVER A GOOD IDEA TO CRY IN FRONT OF WOMEN. I read another post that said women are for fucking, men are friends. He should have just held it in or shrugged it off, then talked about it later with his friends. If you're getting upset, I suggest the 3 breath method (3 slow breaths in, 3 slow breaths out).
