An alpha male will try to maintain status by investing the least possible effort necessary.

You also do not have to speak many words or be loud to lead a conversation.

I'll say that it is a combination of both. An Alpha male will lead conversation, but also do it in few words as u/vandaalen pointed out.

It's an art form. You shouldn't really be the strong, silent and brooding type. If this is how you roll, then you are venturing into Gamma male territory.

I've known many Alpha males to lead conversations. Sometimes through just body language. You're in a conversation. You're talking about something. Then there's the one guy who steers the convo in an entirely different direction. Maybe he's the loud boisterous jerk. But he's still Alpha because people follow him.

The question is not how you do it. The question is what kind of Alpha male are you? Are you the person who is reserved and leading conversations in ways that are civil or are you the guy that says, "Let's do shots!" and is the first to down them while telling everyone else to get on it.

You've probably read both extremities: talking too much, and talking too little. A lot of fat girls I've met (most) talk loudly, and far too much, and as a result a lot of people dislike them. A lot of trashy chicks talk too much or too loudly, to no surprised I distance myself from them and so do a lot of people I consider worth spending time with.

Same works for guys, speak when you have something of value to add to a conversation, I love talking with the homies, we talk shit all day sometimes and it's great fun. In contrast, in a business meeting I limit my talking unless I have something important to say so as not to ramble and become annoying.

The idea works bilaterally; ie. in both directions: you need to use common sense to decide when you should talk and when you are rambling. I hardly find this an alpha thing, and more of a common sense thing. If you want people to enjoy conversation with you, don't overpower the conversation but don't leave the burden of conversation on them alone.
