My friend works in the financial district. All things being equal with hires/promotion, males who are married with a kid are given preferential treatment. They are viewed as being more "suitable for longer term employment." Thoughts?

True. More likely to be loyal and not jump ship when the going gets tough or another opportunity comes up. However, I have found that its not always true.

Thats not jumping ship. Jumping ship is going to a competitor not taking a day off.

lol, I'd imagine a divorced dude with kids is more suitable for longer term employment because they need to pay that alimony and child support

It is because the employers know a man with kids is going to work his ass off. A woman with a husband who works and has kids is not in the same "we got him by the balls" situation as the guy is, because she has options.

The guy, by contrast, has responsibilities.

You can complain how it is unfair, sexist, whatever. But it is what it is. And the financial firms and law firms and accounting firms consulting firms all know it. Their bread and butter is the guy aged 30-45 with kids, a wife without real career, and a big mortgage in the burbs. They work that sumbitch to death.
