You can literally never pay yourself back for what you've already squandered.

I've found that owning this statement is equivalent to paying yourself back for past debts. You can forgive yourself that debt. You can even go crazy into debt again right after if you want, and you can forgive that too. You are on your own side, right? Be your own best friend instead of your own worst enemy. Recognise your mistakes, own them, and then let them go. They may have sent you down one pathway in life instead of another, but it's no use thinking about the pathways you could have gone down instead. Those avenues are closed now, those opportunities are gone. Don't waste your time thinking about them. That time is more productively spent paying attention to your shit RIGHT NOW, instead of mulling over how much of a fuck up you let yourself become
