Actually, she likely went to the WOMENS homeless shelter. While there the helpful staff explained to her that she needed to worm her way back into the house for 30 days without him to establish that it is HER home, and not his. The staff laid out the standard, court-approved game plan for her lifetime alimony and long-term child support.

First, dude needs to file for temporary custody anyway. He needs something in case she pulls this stunt again.

Two, dude needs to get all of his ducks in a row financially. Granted, he works in sales, so that may not be easy to do. After all, a few bad months, and he's in trouble financially. Still, he needs to piece it all together, and do it quickly.

Three, he needs to start plotting to leave. Athol Kay's Male Action Plan is a good base, but he needs to do something. The wife is going to leave, and she's clearly unstable enough to leave a house for a homeless shelter over the occasional six-pack and cigarettes.

Four, is it just me, or is the wife in question the female equivalent of Spreadsheet Husband? At least Spreadsheet Husband didn't drag the kids off, or he didn't complain because he was rejected from sex once. Here's to Shelter Wife becoming a meme. :)

Lawyers recommend soon to be divorced women check into shelters. The first reason is she needs out of the house but show she's being responsible. By being willing to go suck up your pride and check into a shelter shows the court the mother is responsible and intent on doing whatever it takes to care for the kids (rather than, say, going to a friends house which just displays she depends on people when shit gets rough). They also say to do it because it shows that the MAN put her in hardship. He essentially abandoned her and left her to rot in a shelter.

Lawyers know this game very well, and know it's always best designed for the women. As a guy there really isn't much you can do about it other than prepare and constantly play the offensive. But at the end of the day, 9 times out of 10, if she checks into a shelter, it knows she knows how to play the game and the courts are going to loath the father and she will get the kids.

Family court is vile.
