This gave me a good laugh - I always wonder how many people have genuinely tried some technique they read about and have it backfire in some way - whether it be from bad delivery or doesn't fit some situation.

You tried never telling her what you thought of her? She must have asked you many times, for it to be such an issue she would break up. Did she get more and more agitated?
She was into some beta guy who white knighted like fuck and this was sort of the straw that broke the camel's back. Then she dumped the beta and since we used to be good friends before all the issues I'm training him now.

I usually try to avoid the question. It's a tough question to ask so talking over it usually prevents them asking again out of fear for a bad answer. They rather have no answer than a bad one so use that in your advantage.
Make a joke:
'Oh look at the nice weather we're having (smirk).' She'll pinch your arm and whine.
Sexual:
'I think you look really good naked'
Other:
I think you're terrible... Why are you stalking me?'
All could work. Just dont give em an honest answer.
