I got to the part about results vs process oriented goals and started to disagree with the article. In my experiences, results oriented goals are almost always bad. Particularly his dead lift example. It's just like you said, you hit it and move the goalpost, but even worse! What if you don't hit it? What if you set your goal slightly too high? You trained your ass off and gave it your all and didn't get 405lbs by the date you wanted. Talk about discouraging!

With process oriented goals, you go to the gym x times per week, train the best you can, and you'll surpass your 405lb DL eventually. Be consistent, be happy.

I've used results goals consistently for working out, but I do it a bit differently than presented in the article.

My goal is simple: beat myself from my last workout. Go up in reps or weight for every exercise.

There is a significant difference between results and process goals. I've always preferred results because it prevents me from "going thru the motions" that can sometimes happen with process goals.

It's like, "Do X"... ok.. alright. I'll do it.

"Beat X" Sir yes motherfucking SIR!

I'm very competition and results oriented tho, so I know why it works better for me. I do the impossible on a regular basis because as soon as I find out it's impossible that makes me want to do it all the more. I'm also someone who's not discouraged by failure. To me it's just a time to reassess my plans and implementation. In fact, I'll often progressively increase my goals until I do experience failure, and then keep that same progression from last mark until I find a way to turn said failure into a success.

Yeah... it really is about competition for me. I want to beat myself even.

I understand the motivation, but sometimes your body isn't gonna perform as well. Maybe you had a couple drinks the previous night or your nutrition was off the last couple days and you can't beat yourself from your last workout. It's not strictly your fault, but you failed your exercise goal despite giving it your all at the gym, I think that's pretty lame. You put in your effort, you did your workout and you did it well. Why be down on yourself for failing? You didn't fail at anything in reality, but with your goal system, you failed. Maybe we're different in how failure affects us, but if I set a goal for myself that I'm serious about and fail it, that's extremely discouraging.

And in regards to "going through the motions," consistency is the name of the game. I'm still at the stage where it's hard to convince myself to get to the gym 3 times a week every week. As long as I keep going and do my routines, improvement, even if gradual, is guaranteed. Not every trip to the gym is gonna be a weight slamming PR busting grunt-a-thon, but it doesn't have to be.

Nope, it's not lame... it's just failure. Embrace it.

Did I fail because I drank too much last night? Then it's my fault. Correct the drinking.

Did I fail because nutrition? Then it's my fault. Adjust the nutrition.

Did I fail because random bulshit (got sick)? Ok, not my fault here, but oh well. Shit happens.

Did I fail because I just didn't want it enough? Well, that's my fault again. But why didn't I want it? Maybe take a month off lifting: get the something else out of my system and come back to it.

It's just failure. Failure is part of life. Don't ever skip anything because you're afraid to fail at it.

Zero fucks, zero fear.
