I posted this a few days ago when the sub was getting brigaded and it was getting buried, so I deleted the thread so it could see the light of day when the assholes had all gone home.
The article is essentially an in-depth explanation of what SMV is, its aimed more at noobies, although those of you who have been here a while may find some of my insights or mentioned nuances to be of interest.
I hope you all enjoy the piece, if you have any constructive criticism I always appreciate that, so don't be afraid to leave a comment if it's not praise you're offering. Working on a dark triad article on psychopathy at the moment as well (see, I give to the noobies here, and then I give to those more interested in "higher level" shit later) the psychopathy article is taking a little longer than initially projected, however it will come.
Also got an article in the works for puerarchy, been a while since I contributed there. Busy, busy, busy!

Man, those brigaders got us good. They took our internet points, and they told us all that we hate women. As a neckbeard virgin, I was devistated.

"The guy/girl you know who is friends with everyone simply projects different images to different people, a social mirror, a chameleon..."
I know you've had posts in the past about The Dark Triad but that line brought to mind a book I read back in 07 when I was a freshman in college.
http://www.amazon.com/Sociopath-Next-Door-Martha-Stout/dp/0767915828
The author pretty much describes the sociability of dark triad sociopaths in the same way...it's pretty much their MO to "blend in" (be liked, be charming, seem interesting etc) with a group so they can get what they want out the group or an individual within the group.
Just came to mind. Might be a good read if you're looking for some new dark triad source material. You can finish that book in a weekend...pretty short and smooth prose.

The problem with this is if you aren't good at it, you will seem disingenuous and people will start to mistrust you.

Not necessarily.
Your behaviour could entirely be consistent and people can interpret you in different ways (they create their own divergent images of you), but you could still be responded to in the same way and still be considered a friend.
E.g.
My gay ex-roommate Ron was curious and asked me, a polyglot, to pronounce a girl's surname, because she refused to do so for Ron herself. I didn't know what's going on, so I say her surname.
Ron explodes, "BUAHAHAHA. You said it sounds a bit like <something offensive/>... What the fuck are you talking about?! It sounds EXACTLY like <something offensive/>!!!"
He literally rolled on the floor laughing. Watching this overweight, hysterical guy rolling, I quickly followed suit. She cried while telling him to stop. She was clearly angry.
The next day, this bossy guy dragged us a bunch of us at the dorms to a party/event. She was fine as she would have been on any other day. We all went.
I'm not sure what went on in the head of this girl, but the rationalizations (conscious or subconscious) may have gone like this:
"He's really popular."
"We share too many friends."
"He's been mean to others too."
"He's just playful / He was just fooling around anyway."
"Not worth it to get angry over something so small."
Minor assessments of Social Market Value have allowed Ron the jerk to get away with being mean/inconsiderate once again.
For me, my thoughts never really changed. Ron is an inconsiderate jerk, and this was only a minor example of it. I really couldn't stand him, but I'm going anyway, because he somehow has this charisma and is pulling so many beautiful girls with him. I'm going. (Not that this rationalization made a difference, since I was beta and never went for anything anyway.)
The other people in the dorms weren't around to witness the jerkwad action.
It was one sample of his actions, the same one that was witnessed by two different people, and entirely missed by everyone else.
Whether it's a cynical guy, a positive/forgiving/forgetful girl, or people who ignored or are unaware of his action, the responses to that action were the same.
Everyone is "friends" with him for different reasons. Everyone responds to him positively. His behaviour however was entirely consistent.

Charm is power, sounds like he's a machiavellian. Lots of push and pull to create attraction.

Great "intro" style post.
I've always enjoyed reading your blog, and have just added it to the sidebar on my blog.
not everyone will appreciate what you bring to the table, not everyone is attracted to the same things, this goes beyond merely women but counts for friendships and business contacts too. Some people have game breakers which turn out to be deal sealer’s for others, eg: being intelligent, diversity is ironic like that.
How do you decide if something about you is worth changing, or if the person simply is picky about a trait? I suppose just trying to figure out if more than one person dislikes that given trait.
Thanks deepthrill, I appreciate the support. I saw your comment on "Don't outshine the master" earlier as well and will address it at some point.

This installment is a bit long-winded for my taste. I wonder if the key information could be conveyed in a more concise and focused manner?
[–]TRP Vanguard: "Dark Triad Expert"IllimitableMan[S] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It could be. Like anything, you could bulletpoint it. I like to be specific so generally, most of my stuff is long-winded. Don't think I've waffled, been very intricate on a simple concept however.

The moment I read "per say" in the 2nd paragraph, I had to stop. I just can't help thinking that the person writing this isn't as shallow as their knowledge of the language.
Edit: ... and punctuation. And this gem: "the return is too low to return a yield worth investment".
No, just no.

Corrected now, my proof-reading sucks. I miss things. Shoot me. Despite being a dick about it, upvoted for being helpful.

Dude, if you want literate people to listen, it has to be on that level.
And brief. Other comments mention it is long-winded.
Asshole or not, thanks. Definitely a grammar/spelling Nazi. Strangely, one girl I date, who is from Mexico but has really good English, is always thankful for these corrections. Another (total RP-type female) I used to date just couldn't stand it. Then again, she couldn't deal with facts generally, unless they agreed with her often totally wrong idea of things.

You picked out two minor transgressions, one a typo, and another a bad usage of grammar and declared the whole article was thus inane. That's pretty shallow. If you'd read the entirety of the article or read any of my posts, you'd deduce I am incredibly literate. I am however, fucking terrible at proofreading. I think faster than I can touch type and the prevalence of errors is particularly heightened when I'm writing 2,000 word articles. Wordpress/Microsoft word fail to pick up on a lot of grammatical/syntactical errors and typos. It's even worse with Wordpress as I type with British English spelling and it feels the need to correct everything to American English.
Definitely a grammar/spelling Nazi.
I concur. You are committing the logical fallacy of false association - associating grammar/syntax with intelligence as synonymous entities. Language ability is indicative of proficiency to communicate, not of wisdom/logical reasoning.
Really you were bothered by the superficiality of minor transgressions and it was that which closed your mind off to the wisdom that laid within. Some very prolific people have had terrible spelling and grammar, that does not make one illiterate. I don't think this is really even pedanticism per se, just a characteristic nuance of your perception on intelligence. That literacy = intelligence. Speaking as someone who is considered intelligent by many (I won't be vain enough to declare myself as such, just qualifying the next statement here) that is an incredibly unenlightened and bigoted view. However it is also quite common among those who are well-educated, but not particularly wise in the ways of life, as to say, you're book smart, but not street smart so your perception of what constitutes intelligence is not a full picture.
Strangely, one girl I date, who is from Mexico but has really good English, is always thankful for these corrections.
Yes, foreigners are. You're helping them learn a second language. If English wasn't my mother tongue I'd appreciate it too, in fact if I was being corrected in a language that I wasn't proficient in, I'd probably appreciate the pointer, although I'd appreciate being corrected in a way that isn't "holier than thou" or condescending in manner, however to be a grammar hitler to the point of picking out two small things in a rather large article and then declare the author of the article and the article itself to be lacking in value, that's very small-minded and that's not a good thing, you could have benefitted vastly from the contents of the article, but due to minor superficialities would have restricted yourself from ascertaining potentially beneficial knowledge.
I'd work on that, that kind of elitism will only hold you back.
No hard feelings or insult intended, kind regards.

I honestly downvote all grammar nazis. They contribute nothing to the subject at hand (which is what you're supposed to be downvoting).
[–]the_red_scimitar -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Well, your last sentence is completely belied by your first comments. You're pissed, and so what? So you think I'm shallow, unenlightened and bigotted, but "no hard feelings".
You're full of shit. Good luck walking the "I need approval" tightrope.
So you think I'm shallow, unenlightened and bigotted, but "no hard feelings".
Yeah, it's constructive criticism.
I'm sorry you feel that way.
