Part of me would just love to throw the book at these women making false accusations... but I have come to realize that women would be far less likely to recant their false accusations if faced with serious jail time for their lies... Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I would vote they have to go on the sex offender list and inform everybody they know that they cried wolf so other men are aware of their actions.

On the same level of conjecture, one might theorize that they would be that much less likely to make the false accusation, knowing the consequences, and thus deterred in the first place.

I don't think women think of the penalties or consequences of their actions until after they've done them.

That said there is a huge body of knowledge that suggests that increasing the penalties does not typically deter crimes from happening.

The only way to deter crimes from happening is to prevent them by removing the factors that enable a crime to occur (like opportunities or motives). Why do you think the US President has so much security around him? Because they work hard to remove opportunities to assassinate him because they cant remove the motives (like certain policies he expouses) or means (guns from the population at large) of people who want to bring harm to him.
