China's 1 child per family policy puts them in an interesting predicament. Why would a Chinese beta marry a single mom when he can't even have his own kid with her? It seems like Chinese white knights aren't that stupid.

Why would a Chinese beta marry a single mom when he can't even have his own kid with her?

Because with the male:female ratios as out of whack as they are, I'm willing to wager many men won't be having children anyway.

The 1 child per family policy is only in urban areas iirc.

Yeah, and there are ways around it (paying a fee being one of them). This policy is being enacted in a city, though, so the 1 child policy is in effect.

So they are moving from forced abortions to fines.

I wish the US and the rest of the first would would stop incentivising population growth while bitching about overcrowding.

Er... the problem is the social security / retirement / pension pyramid scheme. As long as it is there, first world countries need more kids (or migrants, with another set of issues) to pay into it. Look at this: http://maps.unomaha.edu/Peterson/geog1000/Notes/Notes_Exam1/Population_files/image002.gif

We can't just eliminate social security, because the people who paid into it deserve something, I guess.

One possible solution is putting retirement age to like 70 - originally the retirement age was not longer than the life expectancy i.e. it was on the whole UNCOMMON to live long enough to gather social security / pension. For every person getting it another one or two died with their contribution in the system, to be paid out to the living.

But then again we will have a problem with not being able to give jobs to young people and promotions to the middle aged.

Pyramid schemes work until you run out of people we are running out of space for more people.

I paid in and am forced to continue and all projections tell me I will get nothing.

Not enough jobs for young people OR to many young people. Until we start colonising other planets the population growth rate is unsuitable.

Or we could re-evaluate the 'maximum growth at all costs' economy and go for something far more sustainable.

If a region or country is trying to shrink their population like China is (1 child per family if strictly adhered to would result in a 50% contraction in one generation, 2 parents = 1 offspring). Then such an idea is unsustainable. At some point your economy will have to shrink to scale.

originally the retirement age was not longer than the life expectancy i.e. it was on the whole UNCOMMON to live long enough to gather social security / pension.

Actually, it was set to a level where people would expect to live a few more years. It was set at 65 when the life expectancy was 70 or so. So paying in for almost 50 years got you 5 years of retirement. Now life expectancy is more like 80 years old now and retirement age is still 65 so people and social security type things need to handle with 50 years of paying in and paying out for 15 years (3x as long). The only ways to make this up is to increase the contributions during the 50 years people are working or paying out less.

We can't just eliminate social security, because the people who paid into it deserve something, I guess.

Except the same people who paid into it, as a group. spent all the money.

Good point. Perhaps they should have thought twice about building the massive welfare state if they realized it would cut into their retirement.

[–]Nutz763 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Rights have responsibilities, and if they want to have kids out of wedlock they absolutely should be held responsible for that decision. In this case they are going to tax them, presumably to offset the costs the state is burdened with when women have kids out of wedlock. Smart move, too. In the US that cost is gargantuan, both fiscally and socially. The #1 predictor of social ills such as teen pregnancy, drug abuse, school dropouts, and a variety of other issues, is being raised by a single mother. All of those issues have an incalculable cost to society.

Until single moms aren't held accountable for their decision ans pay for the consecuences the number of bastards will keep growing. Way to go China!.

Negative welfare. That is going a bit too far, isn't it? Why not just natural & social forces let their course without intervention?

[–]ProtectTheCommunity1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Good. Nice to see China isn't blinded by feminism and isn't bowing down to single mothers and the problems they create both socially and fiscally.
