From what I understand, it's only infectious during a flare up - when someone actually has a cold sore.

Basically, if she has a cold sore then don't kiss her or have her mouth on you. You will have most likely kissed many girls who are carriers where it flares up 3-4 times per year when she's run down and you'll have been non the wiser
