I dislike the part "at all costs".

I agree fully that visibility is a key to success - if you're invisible, you're expendable.

But "at all costs" is a misnomer to me. Especially if things aren't going well, courting attention can be highly detrimental to your future. If the shit is hitting the fan, and you're neck is extended to it, your head might just get cut off.

Like all things in life, absolutes tend to be shit advice IMHO. You always need to evaluate the situation and culture, and apply these laws at the appropriate times.

After reading some of the comments, I think this advice could fall into the category of stand out but without being a melodramatic attention whore. This amounts to dressing well, staying in shape, being charming when called for, but, and this is the key point: Not revealing too much about oneself, hence the "more mysterious" part.

Reminds me of all the managers who roll up their sleeves and do all the menial work below their normal duties just to 'help the team', that is, when everyone -especially the big bosses- is watching.

Do not let this rule conflict with Rule #5 "So much depends on reputation - guard it with your life" and you will be fine.

Also the word "court" is defined as "be involved with romantically, typically with the intention of marrying". Hence, there is no courting bad attention - it simply is not romantic.

5- Guard your reputation- means get along well with others, be dependable, be awesome, dont make yourself look bad, dont let your peers shame you, etc.

6- Court attention at all costs- when you do something good or outstanding, make sure it is known by everyone. No point in being awesome at what you do if nobody knows about it or, even worse, somebody else is taking credit for your own work. I knew plenty of good, hard working coworkers who were let go because ultimately the boss or whoever else never knew how good he actually was at his job and how much work he did "behind the scenes" for the company. Hard work is literally a waste of time and energy if no one knows how hard and how good you actually work.

It actually doesnt conflict with 5 at all. They go hand in hand, as 6 builds the reputation you guard with 5.

How are you supposed to balance being quiet and reserved while courting attention "at all costs"? Can someone explain the tradeoff to me a bit further?

Make sure to recognize when it'd be better to slip into the darkness. If you see your boss looking around with those "time to yell at somebody!" eyes, be very interested in your shoes.

Also, never be the loud silly guy. You know the one.
