If I knew, I wouldn't be posting this here.
A bit more back story...
Wife works for a non-profit org, she brought her degree, and her grant proposal voodoo knowledge. They do a lot of community service and in some of the lower positions, they hire recovering addicts, former criminals that have set out to set their lives straight, etc.
Creepy dude is a recovering alcoholic, and was busted for DUI's and lost has family due to his vice, etc. He is basically washed up and scatterbrained. He is genuinely nice, though. He is just a bit ... off.
Now, my wife is polite, well mannered, (to everyone but me) and does not see class or social status. Everyone is equal in her eyes (except me, once again....I am always last priority). So, this guy gets looked down upon everywhere he goes, but me wife treats him with respect and decency.
So, this dude mistakes the feeling of acceptance for something more, and is convinced he is love with her. He passes notes to her, and texts her all of the time "regarding work." The convos usually ask something like "Hey, where is the stapler?" and that quickly devolves into "So, what are you watching on TV tonight, etc. Basically he is always mining for info, so that he can show common interest. He is very transparent, and obviously wishes to supplant my roll in my family, but he really is mostly harmless. Just a bit... off.
Now, my wife loves the attention. She pretends that I do not dote over her all of the time (bad daddy issues).
So, recently dude fell off the wagon, and had to detox, etc. He basically leaned on her (as to someone more appropriate, such as an AA sponsor), as his rock to guide him. I advised her that this really was not appropriate, but understood her wanting to be there for him.
So, many phone calls interrupt our lives during the 30 days. Once again, mostly harmless, but there were interjections from him regarding how he was so lucky to have her in his life, and he will make sure to make this up to her, etc.
So, he is released from rehab, and returns to work. He is more needy than before, and basically relies on her to drive him around, and take care of a lot of basic needs (because why would anyone expect a grown man to buy his own groceries, amirite?).
At this point, I start reiterating my initial concerns, and how if this turns bad, he has the potential for violence, and it could affect her career to be so familiar with someone working in her program.
She let's it roll off her back...
The text messages start increasing in volume (so much so that she had to change her plan), he was calling multiple times a day, and just always on top of her at work.
Once again, my wife craves attention (daddy issues).
So, this starts to spiral and is the subject of arguments for a couple of weeks. She then finally admits that dude is more than just crushin' it is opbvious he is "in love" with her, and she states (I shit you not), "It is just so nice to have someone around that loves me so unconditionally. I would never do anything, but it is a real ego boost."
Da FUQ?
So, need less to say he arguments intensify...
Essentially my therapist is saying this is infidelity, even if there is nothing physical. She is using him for her emotional satisfaction (using him), and leaving the physical and the financial and stress to me.
So, there are a couple of confrontations, and everything seems on the up and up....
And our anniversary rolls around...
I go to the restaurant, and pre-order (We frequent this place, and there is one dish she wants every time) our food, as she will be "leaving work in just a moment."
Well, it turns out that "dude was deprtessed, and needed a friend."
So, I am sitting in the restaurant, getting worried sick as to wear she is, looking at two plates of food, and getting a lot of confused stares.
My wife does not answer the cell while driving, so it should have been pointless to call her, but giving the benefit of the doubt, there may have been an accident on the freeway, etc.
Then my phone rings. "Oh, Dawgboy, I got distracted. Dude just really needed a friend."
...
"I just really needed my wife around for our anniversary."
"but you just don't understand."
"Explain it to me."
"Well, that would be unethical, because he shared some stuff that is very personal."
"If he shared something with a married woman and expects her not to tell her husband, then he seems very naive."
"How dare you say such a thing! He is in pain!"
"How am I supposed to know that? After all, I don't understand, and it would be unethical for you to give me any understanding. All I know is that my wife chose the office alcoholic over me for the last time."
And FIGHT!
