You should always treat human beings with respect unless they do something to lose that respect.
People say you need to earn respect because it justifies their own shitty behavior towards other people.

The solution to earning respect in any healthy environment is simple. Show up, treat everyone respectfully, defer to people with more knowledge and experience than you. Eventually you'll be one of the people other people defer to. Works with anything.

If you join a BJJ gym, don't offer advice to people when you're a white belt.

Of course you also need to understand context. Human attraction is different than earning respect in a community. Sexual strategy is amoral.
