If she's your only 'plate' isn't that just a fuck buddy anyways? Like, what would you be promoting her to? I don't quite understand.

I was in a similar situation, but lasted 7 months. I knew her back when we were teens as platonic friends. Didn’t see her for several years as she lived in another state while her retired father lived in the neighborhood my dad did. She was in a transitional period from a break up that landed her no where to stay in another state, so she came to stay with her dad. She had a year left in her PhD, so it would be foolish with all the debt she had not to go back and finish when her “medical leave” expired. It was great while it lasted. The last few days she was here I got a new plate and invested time with her as the other was leaving back to her home state for school. I blew her off those final days and haven’t heard from her since as she was pretty pissed. It was decided very early on no kind of long distance type thing would occur, but we’d remain friends that would hook up if she visited her dad or I was in her area. As of right now that’s off the table, but over time she’ll come around. With this all being said, establish now it’s probably not a good idea, but you’ll always be here for her and would be happy to see her if your paths cross again.
