People are misunderstanding my question. All I'm asking, is if this taboo of asking a woman her age, is, indeed, a social convention created by the female imperative to protect women's hypergamous nature.

There is no such a taboo. I always ask, when I have nothing else to say. It means nothing.

Except if she looks really young, then I don't ask.

Yeah OP, i hear you. Sometimes you ask a girl who you think is your own age only to find out that she’s like seven years older and then gets offended. I just say something kind of witty like, “i’m (insert age) years old so if you look less than five years older than me i’ll ask.” Like ts a policy of mine or some shit.

Is it hypergamy or just women knowing their SMV declines at the back of their minds and as a result not wanting their age known? Same happens with older guys (>50) to a lesser extent for the same reason. Chances are there are many factors.

It doesn’t really matter unless you want to date, then you shouldn’t give a shit what they say, just don’t ask awkwardly right after you meet them.

Wait until you see each other once or twice & then casually bring it up like “Oh, i totally got it off of my mind, whats your birthday again?”

...sometimes they’ll answer right away with the year or their age but u can play it off like “oh I was just curious about the day and month, I wanted to compare it to mine.”

& then if they still don’t give away their age you can bring up “oh right, so you’re turning 18?” Which should come off as a light joke to her. U can say 21 too if they obviously look older & they’ll usually give their true age then.
