I'm not saying it works like this for everyone, but when my father left us, the first time, I was 12yrs old and I really loved him. I cried for a week, to a point where I wasn't going to school and had headaches. What got me out of that state, was my mother telling me to man up and I'm glad she did. The difference between me being a pussy and the man I am today, was my mother getting me to stop feeling sorry for myself.

When he eventually came back, my mother took him back and he became an alcoholic and physically abusive to her and she took it and stayed. When I was 23 and paying my mother's rent because he was drinking everything he made, I beat the shit out of him, kicked him out and moved back in with my family and warned him, that the next time he lay hands on my mother, I'd permanently maim him. I wouldn't have been able to rid the family of such toxicity had I not been told to man up. We are a much happier family, my younger brothers don't remember those terrible days and Therapy is for pussies and women.
